The African Collaborative Center for Microbiome and Genomics Research (ACCME) is a multi-institutional collaborative research funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). It is a project that is being conducted to develop a better understanding of cervical cancer and the processes involved in the development of the disease. There are several members of this project and they are affiliated with different institutions. These institutions are

To achieve the goals of ACCME, volunteers are invited to participate in the research by visiting the screening clinics engaged in the project. At the screening clinics, trained Research Associates collect relevant information and biological samples. Volunteers are screened for cervical cancer using current state of the art methods – HPV DNA tests. In order for volunteers to fully benefit from this screening, they need to return for scheduled follow up visits where they will be retested. Retesting is important as this is a better option to one time testing in order to identify women who are more likely to have cervical cancer.
