Brief About Prof. Clement A. Adebamowo

Biography

Prof. Clement Adebamowo is a Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, Baltimore and Associate Director Marlene and Stewart Greenabaum Cancer Center at the same university.

His invaluable contribution to cancer research in Nigeria, West Africa and internationally spans from the establishment of a comprehensive genomics laboratory in Nigeria including facilities for epigenetics and next generation sequencing using Illumina NextSeq500 to several research projects, publications and programs that are building the research capacities of young African scientists and training bio-medical researchers on ethics. Prof. Adebamowo is the Principal Investigator of African Collaborative Center for Microbiome and Genomics Research (ACCME), a four year project which involves 10,000 women in Nigeria and offers opportunities to advance understanding of cervical carcinogenesis, viral oncogenesis, new biomarker discovery and risk stratification; and African Female Breast Cancer Epidemiology Study (Afbrecane), aimed at determining the trend and risk factors of breast cancer and its molecular subtypes in Nigerian women. Both are funded projects of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

He is the Principal Investigator of the Fogarty-funded West African Bioethics Training program, the Director of the Nigerian National Systems of Cancer Registries (NSCR), and Director of the Center for Bioethics in Ibadan, Nigeria and the Director of the West African Framework Program for Global Health.

Prof. Adebamowo obtained his medical degree from the University of Jos in Nigeria and subsequently trained in surgery and oncology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. He is also an alumnus of Harvard University where he earned an Sc.D. in Nutrition Epidemiology and minor in Biostatistics.

His research interests are; cancer, nutrition, genomics, non-communicable diseases epidemiology and research ethics.
