Cancer Registration and Epidemiology Training
The Cancer Registration and Epidemiology was organized by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria in collaboration with the International Agency for Cancer Research, the Federal Ministry of Health of Nigeria, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nigeria Office (CDC), the Nigerian Malignancy Consortium, the Society of Oncology and Cancer Research of Nigeria (SOCRON) and the West African Bioethics Training Program (WAB-TP). The training was funded by Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) and SOCRON. It took place from April 7th to 9th 2009 at the third floor training room of the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria’s Central Office, Abuja, Nigeria. There were 69 participants from 30 tertiary hospitals in Nigeria and from the Nigerian Field Epidemiology Training Program of the CDC, Nigerian Office. This three-day training was conducted to enhance collection, storage, analysis and interpretation of data necessary to identify the prevalence of Cancer in Nigeria. Areas covered include History of Cancer Registration in the World and in Nigeria; Epidemiology and Incidence of Common Cancers in Nigeria; HIV/AIDS and Malignancies in Nigeria; Purposes and Uses of Cancer Registration; Planning a Community-based Cancer Registry; Data Sources for Cancer Registration; Classification and Coding of Neoplasms; Quality and Quality Control in Cancer Registration; Data Reporting; Challenges of Cancer Registration in Developing Countries; and Legal and Ethical Aspects of Cancer Registration. The third day was devoted to skills acquisition in CanReg Software Training and Implementation. The resource persons were Dr Clement Adebamowo (IHVN),Dr Oluyemisi Akinwande (IHVN), Prof Ekaette Ekanem (UCTH), Prof Effiong Akang (UCH), Prof Femi Ogunbiyi (UCH), Dr Aminu Zakari (AKTH), Dr Peju Osinubi (FMOH), Dr Abdul-Kareem (LUTH), Prof Muheez Durosinmi (OAUTHC), Dr Maria-Paula Curado (IARC) and Mr Mortem Ervik (IARC).The sessions were chaired by Dr Emmanuel Ezeome (UNTH) , Dr Terna Yawe (UNIMAID) and Dr Temidayo Ogundiran (UCH) as well as some of the resource persons. Training materials handed out to participants included binders, which contained recommended readings for each lecture, a copy of Cancer Registration Principles and Methods manual, lectures handouts and soft copies of all readings and lectures saved on CD. All lectures and readings are also available on the IHVN website
