Training on Modern Research Ethics and Good Clinical Practice
The training was organized by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) in collaboration with the West African Bioethics Training Program (WAB). It was funded by Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP). It took place on April 2nd and 3rd 2009 at the third floor Training room of the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria’s Central Office, Abuja. Twenty lead Physicians and Surgeons from nine ACTION supported sites participated in the Training . Resource persons were: Drs. Clement Adebamowo and Oluyemisi Akinwande from IHVN; Drs (Rev. Father) Bernard Faneye and Samuel Jegede from WAB. Training objectives included increasing capacity of local investigators for safe implementation of research, increasing awareness, knowledge and understanding of the Principles of Research Ethics, and Guidance in completion of an on-line training on basic human subjects research. Areas covered at the training included: Historical Development of Ethics of Research Involving Human Participants; Principles of Research Ethics; Concepts of Risk and Types of Ethical Review; Paying Research Participants – Therapeutic Misconception and Evaluating Researchers Conflict of Interest; Introduction to Clinical Ethics; Ethics Committee Records and Reports; Concepts of Voluntariness, Exploitation and Vulnerability; Protection of Research Participants,; Communities and Local Researchers; Standard of Care Debate; and Research Misconduct – Falsification, Fabrication and Plagiarism. Authorship and Ownership of Data The training included group exercises meant to examine ethical issues in International Health Research and on CITI Training for all participants. Training materials handed out to participants included binders, which contained recommended readings for each lecture, on-line human subjects’ research training manual, lectures handouts and soft copies of all readings and lectures saved on CD. All lectures and readings are also available on the IHVN website
