ACT Rescues Convulsing District Head’s Son
The day before the Moslem Sallah celebrations, Abdulkadir, the son of a district head in Jikamshi, Musawa Local Government Area, Katsina State, started convulsing. He was down with fever the day before, but he became worse while preparations for the celebration were ongoing.
Before then, Aisha, Abdulkadir's mother was told by the Role Model Mothers (RMMs) trained by Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) that free Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) are being given to treat malaria. Abdulkadir was treated with ACT and recovered after three days and has not fallen sick with malaria since then.
Aisha also noted that the malaria cases in the house with four children have reduced. She believes that the Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Net (LLIN) which the Role Model Mothers (RMM) taught her to use have been effective. She had received two nets during the Roll Back Malaria Campaign and was taught by the IHVN Role Model Mother Hussaina Mohammed to use the nets. She now uses both nets for her family.
The increased use of mosquito nets may be the reason for the reduction of the cases of malaria recorded in the eight clinics that provide ACT in Musawa Local Government Area. According to the Malaria Focal Person for Musawa LGA, MansirYunusa, in 2010, 10016 malaria cases were recorded. This has reduced to 8943 cases in 2011. MallamMansir stated that the clinics have also witnessed more pregnant women coming to the hospitals for antenatal care where they listen to health talks by Role Model Mothers.
IHVN Program Assistant Global Fund Fatima Aliyu notes that this increase in hospital visits is significant "Most men do not allow their wives to go out to the hospitals to access care. These role model mothers are helping.… Sometimes, these RMMs go with them to the hospitals. Mothers, who used to take native medicines are now going to the hospitals with their children and even when they complain of transportation costs to the hospital, they have trained RMMs in their communities who give them free drugs provided by the Global Fund Malaria Project through the National Malaria Control Program" she said.
